Currently, Hans serves as the Executive Director of the Energy Technical Services branch where he sets and manages the Government of Alberta’s strategic research and innovation plan for resource development and provides Scientific and Technical Services to Policy Development and Program Services for the Department of Energy.

Over the years, his career has taken him and his family from the Netherlands to France, Canada, the Middle East, and finally back to Canada. Short term business assignments allowed him to visit the Far East, China, Australia and New Zealand as well.

Hans has a strong background in operational management of oil refining and upgrading facilities. Always striving for operational excellence, his track records include implementing sustained efficiency improvements in cost reduction and revenue generation, while maintaining safety performance. He is passionate about process safety, and is a strong believer that influencing positive behaviors by addressing employees and other stakeholders’ needs and issues, will ultimately lead to better safety and overall business performance.

Hans Cüsters is a graduate of the University of Eindhoven in The Netherlands. He has a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, and is non-practicing certified energy consultant. He is a practicing member of APEGA and holds a designation as Professional Engineer (P. Eng.).
