Assoc. Director of Campus & Industry Partnerships
Job Summary: Reporting to the Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency, serves as Associate Director by helping to direct and provide strategic guidance to the Institute's research program and goals. Engages industry to create industrial research programs at the Institute. This is a high-profile position, which requires the incumbent to communicate directly with Deans, Senior Faculty, CEO's, Vice Presidents, and other "C-level" individuals on campus and at US and global corporations and other comparable entities. Also plays a lead role in stewarding the relationships for the Institute for Energy Efficiency with its current corporate partners. This includes, but is not limited to, interfacing between industry and academia, providing corporate partners access to science and engineering research and the associated faculty, access to undergraduate and graduate students for the purposes of strategic recruiting, and a thorough understanding of the facilities for use by industry.
Full Description: Works with the Director of IEE in creating and establishing interdisciplinary and interdepartmental partnerships across campus. Facilitates the efforts to help drive collaborations and ensure representation across organizational functions. Independently fosters and develops relationships and collaborations with deans, department heads, faculty, & university administrators, to elevate the quality of research programs.
Plans and implements proactive outreach to potential industry partners, tailoring communications to explain how a strategic alliance with the University research program will serve their unique and custom needs and building and leveraging relationships with high level contacts and key decision makers to generate opportunities for entering into research partnerships. Facilitates outreach activities and bridges potential areas of interest.
Provides insight on the vision, strategy and execution of research initiatives and external relations; builds a reputation of leadership, innovation, and collaboration within the Institute and the community by forging partnerships and creating unique and innovative opportunities. Develops and proposes persuasive strategies outlining plans for research collaborations to identify how the Institute and prospective partners can form a mutually beneficial partnership.
Develops and sustains partnerships to establish a base of reliable industry partners. Engages new partners and expands existing partnerships to maximize the value of the relationship for the Institute and the organization. Consults and works in concert with other campus department/units involved in industry relations (CAP, TIA, TMP, etc.).
Serves as liaison between the Institute and UC Office of the President on UC-wide research initiatives and programs.
Provides high-level analysis for the Director on a broad range of issues pertaining to Institute research. Maintains and builds upon the program's prominence across research initiatives in a way that reflects and enhances the Institute's growing reputation.
Initiates studies, summary reports and background materials including approaches, trends, sources and uses that have a significant impact on research. Formulates strategies and leads implementation of emerging initiatives that place the research program as an industry thought leader and position the program for follow on opportunities.
Assists the Director and works with IEE faculty on proposals and other research related activities on an as-needed basis. Guides research in areas important to IEE. Mentors research teams in the formulation and execution of new research directions, in academia and while potentially partnering with industry.
Writes technical components of research proposals. Meets with potential industrial and government funding agencies to foster relationships. Writes technical reports for contracts in which incumbent holds leadership role as required by funding agencies.
Provides public relations support by interacting with local and national news organizations on promoting IEE, UCSB, and energy efficiency. Attends and represents IEE at promotional events, such as conferences, lectures, tours, and visits. Prepares and distributes digital press releases, as needed, to be distributed via IEE website and email lists. Preparation of press releases involves independently writing technical content.
Interacts with potential Institute donors and advises IEE Director in preparing materials to present.
