Role: Analyst - Unconventional Play Service

Location: Houston, TX

Role Purpose

The Unconventional Play Service (UPS) was launched in 2009 in response to strong client demand for comprehensive analysis of this rapidly emerging resource theme.  Wood Mackenzie’s UPS analysis includes a range of material, from reservoir characteristics and well performance, to above ground issues and fiscal incentives. An analyst for the UPS team will play a critical role in ensuring continued growth of this strategically important offering. 

The role will suit an individual who is working to develop deep analytical skills and enjoys working in databases. The successful candidate will work with a global team that researches, models, analyses, and benchmarks over 120 unconventional plays. The successful candidate will need to be dedicated to learning the entire value chain in tight gas, shale gas, coal bed methane, and light tight oil assets. Key to this position will be cross-team collaboration skills.  Emphasis will be placed on synthesising strategic global issues and trends from regional upstream experts, as well as feeding back our team’s view to other groups within Wood Mackenzie.  Strong data management skills are mandatory.  The successful candidate will need to help ensure that the UGS dataset and all analyses meet the highest quality standards expected from clients.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist in content development for UPS analysis and Insights
  • Lead quality control and data management initiatives for the UPS dataset, internal models, and all published research on the UPS web portal
  • Ensure value-added working relationships are maintained with other Wood Mackenzie teams
  • Build trusting rapport with key UPS clients
  • Identify, validate, and capture key sources of Unconventional Play information

Job Requirements

Experience

Knowledge and Experience Required

  • Please note: At least one year experience working with databases is required and strong database skills and interests are highly desired
  • At least one year experience with Excel and Access (pivot tables, macros, VBA, ODBC, SQL)
  • At least one year prior experience in an energy research environment
  • Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline (Economics, Finance, MIS, Geology, Petroleum Engineering)
Skills

Key Competencies

  • Analytical capabilities can include: discounted cash flow modelling, decline curve analysis, and corporate benchmarking
  • Advanced proficiency with Excel and Access (pivot tables, macros, VBA, ODBC, SQL)
  • Other programs and languages that are a plus include: Oracle, Spotfire, Python, C Programming, HTML, .NET, ArcGIS or similar geospatial software
  • Well-developed primary and secondary research skills
  • Clear communication skills
  • Commitment to excellence and a proven ability to work to tight deadlines
