Expert Business Financial Analyst for Emerging Clean Technologies-San Francisco

The Smart Grid and R&D Project Management Office (PMO) is a newly formed innovation and

incubator group within PG&E’s Electric Operations that is focused on finding and funding exciting

new strategies and technologies for the electric grid that advance safety, reliability and

cost-efficiency while advancing California's clean energy goals. The PMO is responsible for 1)

identifying, analyzing, approving, and funding promising opportunities for utility innovation 2)

coaching, monitoring and stress testingin-flight projects to confirm they are on track/ provide

deeper assistance where feasible, and 3) providing program level governance, oversight and

reporting to internal and external stakeholders to track progress against key portfolio health

indicators such as innovation achievements, milestones, financials and benefits met.

Position Summary

In the Business Financial Analyst position, you will be responsible for all aspects of the PMO’s

financial performance including budgeting and target setting, forecasting, financial reporting,

portfolio analysis, as well as working with individual project teams across multiple departments to

ensure their individual budgets & financials are of the highest quality in order for you to accurately

maintain program level financials.

You will be part of a small, fast-paced team that is at the forefront of clean technology efforts

including grid integration of renewable energy, Smart Grid/grid modernization and resiliency,

providing innovative and enhanced services to customers such as grid integration of electric

vehicles, energy storage (customer and utility scale), distributed generation, and the foundational

efforts (Data Architecture, Telecommunications, Cybersecurity, Standards) to envision and build

the grid of the future. As the chief financials analyst overseeing a multi-year, $250M fund, you will

be developing, implementing and executing procedures conceptually similar to overseeing the

investments of a Venture Capital firm.

ethic, attention to detail, understanding of the utilities’ role in meeting California’s energy policy

goals, capacity to adapt to different management styles, desire to stretch yourself, and lots of

enthusiasm. Since you are part of a small team, financial proficiency is the table stakes for the

position; you will be expected to wear different hats to advance the strategic, operational, and

regulatory requirements of the Program Management Office.

Job Requirements



Bachelor of Arts / Science in accounting, business, finance, technology, engineering, or related


Minimum of 6 years hands on experience in financial analysis, developing budgets, forecasts and

researching/formulating variance explanations

The minimum of 6 years experience will also include the following:

Understanding of accounting concepts such as capital vs expense treatment, accruals,

depreciation, financial controls

Advanced MS Excel skills including Macros and Pivot Tables, formulas, graphs/charting and

complex analysis

Consulting, Project and /or program management experience


Master's degree in Business Administration or equivalent field

Experience with MS- Access, Visual Basic for Application (VBA) or Visual Basic (VB) Coding

Understandings/ Experience with IT systems development and implementation methodologies

Financial Analysis and Reporting

Experience or exposure to financial budgeting, analysis, forecasting, and reporting at both the

project level and portfolio level, including portfolio variability and simulation (Monte Carlo) analysis

Excellent data analysis skills including presenting complex data simply.

Strong problem solving and decision making skills to develop comprehensive solutions.

Exposure to utility regulatory processes, reporting, filings and/or testimony

Understanding of SAP or other financial reporting packages


Demonstrated strong work ethic and exceptional levels of accountability, self-drive, and business


Excellent writing skills to create compelling business plans or other documents

Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills.

Extremely strong computer skills in all products within the Microsoft Office suite; Expert Microsoft

Excel skills

Experience with Microsoft SharePoint and Visio

Experience with MS-Access, other databases including data analytics software packages

Familiarity with Microsoft Project, Primavera, SAP Project Systems, SAP Plant Management or

other project/work management systems

Broad understanding of the utility or energy industry drivers, issues and trends.

Program Management and Governance

Knowledge of program management including governance, compliance, roles & responsibilities,

processes and procedures

Previous project management experience or exposure to project management desired, preferably

in technology, new product/project launch or utility industry
