Associate Engineer

Description
NRG is seeking an Associate level Engineer to contribute to the growth of NRG’s Facility /Air Group and provide environmental permitting support to the Operational Compliance group. The position will be located in our Minneapolis office. This individual will assist primarily with energy-related capital development and facility/pipeline projects. Projects are often fast-paced, multi-faceted, and geographically diverse - allowing a talented person to gain valuable task management skills and broad exposure to federal, state and local, air, water, and waste and National Environmental Policy Act regulations. The primary role of this position is to provide project technical support which may include, but is not limited to: • Developing and producing civil engineering designs of storm water, utility, roadway, and other infrastructure systems from conceptual layouts to final design; • Completing engineering drafting and design using HydroCAD, and AutoCAD Civil 3D software; • Preparing permit applications where required by federal, state or local environmental regulatory authorities for energy/industrial facility development, expansion, maintenance or decommissioning; • Evaluating regulatory requirements; • Assisting with the preparation of technical project documents, including CAD, writing, word processing, building tables and spreadsheets, tabulating and manipulating data, producing hard copy documents, and maintaining mailing lists; • Assisting with the development of project plans and schedules; setting up projects in project management software; and assisting with the development of project management reporting, such as monthly progress reports; • Assisting clients with field services such as site surveys and storm water inspections, soil and groundwater sampling; • Communicating with clients, including requesting project information, answering regulatory questions, and providing recommendations; • Preparing environmental plans such as erosion control plans, storm water pollution prevention plans (SWPPPs), spill prevention, control, and countermeasures (SPCC) plans, and health and safety plans (HASPs) for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance, Risk Management Plans (RMPs), and Facility Response Plans (FRPs); and • Updating and preparing Best Management Practices drawings for NRG and clients. Project work will involve travel which may range from 20 - 40%, including on-call and weekends, depending on the time of year and project requirements for field work and/or project team meetings. The position will require a candidate who is accustomed to working both independently and on project teams and has the capacity to manage varying priorities and multiple tasks in order to work on multiple projects concurrently and meet deliverable deadlines. Balancing field work with office deliverable responsibilities will be managed with input from the group/project manager. Required Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in environmental or civil engineering field of study; • A desire to pursue Engineer in Training (EIT) and Professional Engineer (PE) accreditations; • 0 - 5 years of applicable work and/or internship experience; • Strong working knowledge of MS Office Suite software; • Thorough understanding of the environmental rules that apply to construction projects; • Knowledge of erosion and sediment control design; • Knowledge of hazardous materials, hydrogeology, geomorphology and/or wetlands; • Evidence of strong analytical and technical writing skills and experience in writing technical documents on a variety of natural resource or resource planning topics; • Experience in National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting and compliance, including storm water permitting; • Experience in hydrology/hydraulics and design of roadway and utility projects; • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D software; • Willing to work full-time primarily in an office setting; • Must meet criteria identified in Job Demands & Conditions Analysis for Office and Field Positions; • High attention to detail with experience in Quality Control/Quality Assurance programs; and • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, which includes being comfortable and effective at communicating complex technical knowledge and concepts to other staff, clients, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders. Desired qualifications: • Experience with drafting and design using HydroCAD, and AutoCAD Civil 3D software • Experience working with or knowledge of natural resource management agencies • Field or consulting experience • Familiarity with field survey techniques Candidates that are asked to interview for the position will be required to take a short technical writing test to demonstrate technical writing competence.
