Position: Advisor (Calgary)

Position Overview

The Pembina Institute is seeking a highly motivated individual to join its Alberta team as an Advisor for its consulting practice at its head office in Calgary. We are seeking a highly driven and resourceful person with three to five years of relevant technical experience, strong analytical skills, relevant energy/environment experience, a solid work ethic and a persistent drive to succeed to solve Canada's most prominent sustainability challenges. Areas of responsibility will include corporate, government and community based consulting projects related to oil and gas and oilsands as well as support for policy work led by oilsands program staff. The candidate should have proven project experience and the ability to thrive with limited supervision. This full time (40 hours a week) position may require travel and requires occasional work on evenings and weekends.

The salary rate is competitive for an Advisor in the environmental non-profit sector and will be based on skills, experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

Roles and Responsibilities


  • Conduct thorough technical, quantitative analyses; these will focus mainly on projects in oil and gas and oilsands, but may also include clean electricity or energy efficiency
  • Critically review the quantitative analysis of peers
  • Conduct high-quality literature research for a range of projects
  • Create high-quality project deliverables — reports, presentations, Excel models
  • Manage client relationships

Project Management

  • Support the business development process through writing consulting and grant proposals and creating project plans
  • Collaborate with the various internal teams at Pembina
  • Manage projects from initiation to completion, with particular emphasis on budget, schedule and meeting client expectations
  • Coordinate internal and client meetings/workshops

Oilsands Policy

  • Complete qualitative and quantitative research, analysis and writing on the environmental impacts of oilsands development, and propose technical and policy solutions
  • Develop and maintain constructive relationships with other ENGOS, First Nations, oilsands companies and government
  • Represent the Pembina Institute’s views at meetings, presentations and to the media (pending appropriate training and experience)

Skills and Qualifications

Candidates must clearly reflect the following skills and experience in their application:

  • Technical competence
    • Relevant experience in economic or technical analysis of energy and environmental matters
    • Advanced user of Microsoft Excel
  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or energy/environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and social change; this can be through your educational, professional, and volunteer experiences
  • Relevant industry experience or understanding in energy and environment (other relevant areas may include associated government departments; environmental/CSR consulting; academia, government and/or advocacy, other environmental organization)
  • Project management experience
  • Facilitation and public speaking experience
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and strong interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented, with strong drive and initiative to succeed

Familiarity with some of the following are considered assets:

  • Oilsands, natural resources management, economics, or environmental law
  • Climate policy, water policy, aquatic ecology, toxicology or air emissions from industrial processes
  • Environmental impact assessment, environmental management/decision making, political decision-making, resource economics, and/or principles of environmental protection
