NYSEIA Policy Associate
New York State (remote position with periodic travel to Albany, Long Island, and New York City required)
New York Solar Energy Industries Association (NYSEIA) is a membership and trade association dedicated to accelerating solar energy deployment across New York State. As the state’s longest-standing solar trade association, NYSEIA has successfully pursued legislative, programmatic, and regulatory initiatives shaping the policies, programs, and regulations of the state over the past 20 years. As New York’s solar market continues to expand and mature, and with a number of key legislative and regulatory shifts underway, the next decade will be a pivotal period for solar in the Empire State.
NYSEIA seeks a Policy Associate to drive the execution of its strategic policy objectives to expand New York’s solar market. The Policy Associate will work in close coordination with the Executive Director, as well as NYSEIA’s Board of Directors, Policy Committee, and membership, to formulate and implement NYSEIA’s regulatory, programmatic, and legislative policy objectives in areas including, but not limited to:
* Long Island Policy Advocacy
* Property Tax/PILOT Reform
* Obstacles to Community Solar expansion
* NY-Sun and MW-Block Programs Compensation (NEM/VDER)
* Track developments on the policy issues outlined above by interfacing with NYSEIA members and external stakeholders; conduct quantitative/qualitative research as necessary.
* Coordinate and engage with members of NYSEIA’s Long Island Solar & Storage Alliance (LISSA) to formulate, implement, and advocate for key solar industry policy priorities related to Long Island.
* Engage with NYSEIA’s key internal stakeholders including member organizations, Board of Directors, Policy Committee, and NYSEIA working groups to gather input and facilitate consensus on NYSEIA’s position and strategy on the policy issues outlined above.
* In coordination with the Executive Director, lead the implementation of NYSEIA’s policy objectives, strategy and campaigns by drafting position letters, comments for regulatory proceedings, and quantitative/qualitative research as necessary.
* Engage and interface with key external stakeholders, including legislators, state agencies, legislative/executive/regulatory staff, other advocacy groups, and electric utilities to communicate and advocate for NYSEIA’s policy priorities.
* Communicate key policy developments to NYSEIA membership by leading membership and working group conference calls and drafting member updates/newsletters for circulation.
* Assist with programming for NYSEIA events and represent NYSEIA and the New York solar industry at regional and national working groups, conferences, and meetings throughout the year.
* The ideal candidate is passionate about renewable and solar energy and has a broad knowledge of issues affecting distributed solar energy development and deployment, particularly in New York State.
* Prior experience in public policy and renewable/distributed/solar energy markets is highly preferred.
* Proven experience advancing policy and legislative objectives through stakeholder engagement.
* Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
* Robust qualitative/quantitative research skills.
* Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred but not necessary.
* This is a full-time position based in New York.
* Compensation will be competitive and based on the experience and skills of the applicant.
* Applicants are expected to work remotely from their own office.
* Periodic travel to Albany, Long Island, and New York City will be required.
* Potential to advance to Policy Director level based on performance.
