The Wholesale Energy Market Operator job title is more reflective of how the industry views this role. At Wisconsin Electric Power Company, the role’s responsibilities have evolved with the onset of the ISO/RTO environment. Internally, the job title is Power Trader.

Job Responsibilities
As a Power Trader, you will help minimize costs to serve our electric customers while maximizing the value of our generation resources within the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market. Once qualified as a real-time Power Trader, you will work a rotating 12-hour shift dispatching generation resources to minimize the cost of serving load while supporting bulk electric system reliability in a safe manner. You will be using a vast array of applications and services to monitor market conditions and respond to emergent issues. In addition, the Power Trader works with both internal and external partners to coordinate unit availability, maintenance needs and outage requests in a reliable and cost effective manner while complying with all applicable business rules and Independent Market Monitor requirements. The above must all be accomplished with demonstrated situational awareness and a commitment to developing an understanding of MISO market operations, emergent bulk electric system technologies and various reliability standards, rules and practices. The Power Trader will also be expected to contribute to on-going process and procedure improvements.
Minimum Experience Required
Successful candidates typically hold a Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering field, Economics, Computer Science, or related field. In lieu of the degree requirement, we are also very interested in candidates having five (5) or more years of relevant work experience in generation dispatch, transmission system operation and/or wholesale electric market operations. NERC system operator certification is required; those without certification must obtain it within 3 to 6 months prior to beginning on-the-job training. We will provide you with support and training for this certification.
Preferred Qualifications
A candidate with knowledge of the Midcontinent regional generation/transmission system, locational marginal pricing markets or basic energy trading would be preferred. Additionally, knowledge of renewable resources and emerging generation technologies is a plus.
