YPE Dubai & Abu Dhabi – EWS-WWF Speaker Event – The Paris Climate Agreement and the UAE

The Paris Climate Agreement and the UAE:
Charting a Low-Carbon, Climate-Resilient Policy Pathway

Following untiring diplomatic efforts spanning many years, a climate agreement was adopted at the 21st Session of the Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in Paris. The Agreement sets ambitious targets on limiting global temperature rise, acknowledging climate science. It calls on countries to make nationally determined contributions to the global mitigation effort with progressive increase in ambition: in effect, the legal framework provides the critical ‘terms of reference’ for country parties and the agreement is only as strong as the national actions it galvanizes.

The UAE, a party to the Agreement, submitted its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution to the UNFCCC in the run-up to Paris. The UAE’s greenhouse gas mitigation policies can contribute to reducing the climate threat, while bringing economic and social co-benefits – at a time when the country is deliberating on the blueprint for a ‘post-oil economy’, signals a win-win scenario.

What are the salient outcomes of the Paris Agreement and what are its implications for policymaking? What can the UAE do to fulfil its role as a responsible member of the international community? How can it emerge as a global low-carbon leader? How can we continue and expand the momentum created by the Agreement? The talk will aim to answer these questions.
