Description

About NP Energy

NP Energy is a boutique consulting firm providing strategy and expertise for the 21st century electric grid. We provide electric sector consulting services for clean energy companies, environmental advocacy organizations, utilities, and other industry stakeholders, with particular emphasis on the intersection of reliability and decarbonization in utility planning and resource procurement. We generate value for clients by bridging policy, markets, and engineering considerations, blending qualitative and quantitative techniques to help clients navigate and influence the fast-changing electric utility sector. Our work is focused primarily on policy design in the California market, on utility planning in the broader Western Interconnection, and on capacity markets in eastern ISOs (PJM, MISO, ISO-NE, NYISO).

Desired Candidates

NP Energy is seeking consulting talent from one or both of the following tracks:

Policy Consultant: The Policy Consultant role will provide support with tracking, analyzing, and synthesizing policy issues in jurisdictions of interest:

  • Proficiency in energy policy issues, with particular emphasis on utility-scale energy market issues
  • Ability to review, triage, and synthesize complex regulatory and legislative proceedings
  • Familiarity with jurisdictions of interest – California, vertical utility processes, capacity markets
  • Strong intuition on the intersection between technical modeling and real-world policies and markets
  • Capacity to support and eventually own the development of regulatory comments and expert testimony
  • While specific domain and jurisdictional expertise is preferred, sophistication and proficiency navigating and engaging with complex policy issues may be a suitable replacement

Technical Consultant: The Technical Consultant role will provide support with managing and executing analysis in support of client policy and market engagement:

  • Proficiency in electricity market fundamentals and resource planning technical processes
  • Ability to review, conceptualize, and execute quantitative analysis on a wide range of energy topics
  • Familiarity with core technical and modeling workflows in resource planning – capacity expansion, production cost modeling, risk analysis, etc
  • Strong intuition on the intersection between technical modeling and real-world policies and markets
  • Capacity to support and eventually own the review of regulatory and utility modeling initiatives
  • While specific domain and jurisdictional expertise is preferred, sophistication and proficiency navigating and engaging with complex energy policy and market issues may be a suitable replacement
  • The preferred candidate will have the ability work programmatically with datasets, preferably in R, with strong bonus points for proficiency in data visualization skills

A candidate who blends both skillsets would be highly competitive for this role (a B+ in two complementary disciplines is almost always better than an A+ in one).

Compensation

The position is fully remote, with a competitive salary and benefits package depending on experience and qualifications. Flexible hours and part-time / contract roles may be considered for the right candidate.
